Houston…I Haiku for You

Houston…I Haiku for You

Happy New Year – and almost one month! I’ve been pretty absent from the site for a while, in large part because I’ve been writing on Medium, but aim to do better here in 2021.

A few years back, full of energy and creativity, I signed up for an new Instagram account (@houstonihaikuforyou). Then I let it sit there for two years.

But hope springs eternal. And I wanted to do something that would be fun for me and fun for you. Which brings me to a haiku. See, I’m already rhyming!

OK, I know – a haiku is not generally a rhyming poem. It is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, which customarily invoke the natural world. I am not going to hold myself to the nature part.

My intent is to post a photo weekly on Instagram with a haiku. If you guess the place you go into the pool. One randomly selected winner each Monday will get a free coffee. Or a Starbucks ecard if you live too far from me. You must be OK with Starbucks.

I miss being a tourist in my town. But when I was active, I was really active – dragging my kids places they did (and did not) want to go. To add – I am Crazy Photo Lady, so I have quite the repository to get me through a pandemic spring.

Some of the photos may be random neighborhood pictures too. Who knows? I’m going to see where this takes me.

If you want to play along, follow @houstonihaikuforyou or I will post the pictures on this Facebook page too.

For the inaugural haiku, I am going to start with an easy one. Let’s hope I get the syllables right each week. See the photo above. Here goes:

Bird’s eye view for sure

Of water, sand, and blue sky

The Pleasure is yours

The winner will be as specific as possible. May the odds ever be in your favor.
